Particles with Groups

In this tutorial we'll be creating a simple (low density) grass plane to show how to generate a particle emitter with a mesh group.  So the first step is to create a group of meshes.  In this case, I created a set of blades of grass.

Move this set of meshes to a separate layer [m + #].

In the new layer, select all meshes and [Ctrl + g] to create the group.  Name the group in the tools panel if you desire.

Back in the first layer, add a new plane.  Adjust the the plane shape so that it fills up the camera view as closely as possible.  It is important to minimize the size of the particle parent as the renderer will try to render all particles, even the ones not seen by the camera.

With the new plane acting as the ground selected, add the particle emitter in the tool bar (as seen below) and apply the appropriate settings as identified by orange boxes.  The last box is where you specify which mesh group to use.  In this example there was only the one I made called "Group".

At this the point, the particles should be visible on the plane.

When rendered you can see how the different blades of grass are scattered about the plane.
