Edge Fillet

This tutorial shows how to make use of a very cool add-on known as the Edge-Fillet tool.  This is a feature more commonly found in 3D CAD drafting software, but could prove very useful in smooth edge meshes where subsurf doesn't provide enough control.

Since this is not a built-in add-on, it must be downloaded.  I found it at this link (since it's a forum link, you'll need to register first, and there's no guarantee it will always be there).

Once you have it downloaded (along with other cool tools), install it the normal way through the Add-ons menu in Blender.

To use the tool, two edges must first be selected.

Click the Fillet button in the tools panel, and adjust the properties of the fillet in the bottom of the tools panel (see below).

For this example, i want to make a rounded rectangle, so I'm going to use a Mirror modifier to make all the filleted corners the same.  For this case i'll be mirroring the X and Y axis.

Once the mirror modifier is enabled, I'll extrude up to give the mesh some height.  Then I'll apply a Solidify modifier to give the mesh some thickness.  Recalculate normals may be required for the solidify modifier to be applied right.

Here is the final mesh. It could perhaps be the bumper guard or base mesh for a particular brand of cell phone.
