There is a very simple way to key frame visibility of an object. In the Outliner window, a keyframe can be set on the scene visibility or the render visibility simply by [Right-Clicking] on either the Eye icon, or the Camera icon.
This will allow for a keyframe to be added based on whether the Eye/Camera is visible at the time.
Once keyframes are applied, a circle appears around either the Eye icon or the Camera icon.
This can produce very simple hide and show animations like the one below.
